Google Messages finally added live location sharing in March 2026. Here’s how to use it, how to stop sharing, and everything you need to know about privacy controls.
Google Messages has had real-time location sharing as a long-requested feature for years. WhatsApp has had it. iMessage has had it. Telegram has had it. Google Messages is Android’s default messaging app for millions. However, it didn’t until now.
In March 2026, Google started rolling out real-time location sharing in Google Messages. This was part of the Android ecosystem update for users worldwide. The feature uses Google Find Hub and works in RCS chats. You can share your live location for a set time right in the chat. There’s no need to switch to Google Maps or any other app.
This guide explains how to:
-
Share your real-time location
-
View someone else’s shared location
-
Stop sharing your location
-
Understand privacy implications
| Before you start:
To share your location in real-time using Google Messages, RCS must be on for both devices. Also, both users need to be signed into a Google Account. It does not work over SMS. To see the feature, first update Google Messages from the Play Store. Then, wait a few days for it to roll out to your account. |
How to Share Your Real-Time Location in Google Messages
The steps below are based on the feature as it rolled out in March 2026. The feature is accessed through the attachment menu inside any RCS conversation.
| 1 | Open Google Messages
Launch the Google Messages app on your Android device. Make sure you are running the latest version update via the Play Store if needed. |
| 2 | Open the conversation Tap the conversation with the person or group you want to share your location with. This must be an RCS conversation look for the ‘Chat’ indicator or the blue send button. Standard SMS conversations do not support this feature. |
| 3 | Tap the attachment icon (+)
Tap the ‘+’ icon (attachment button) to the left of the message text field. This opens the attachment panel with options including photos, camera, files, and the new Real-time location option. |
| 4 | Tap ‘Real-time location’
In the attachment panel, tap the ‘Real-time location’ option. If you do not see it, the feature may not yet be active on your account it is rolling out gradually. |
| 5 | Accept the Google Location Sharing confirmation (first time only)
The first time you use this feature, you will see a screen asking you to confirm updates to your Google Location Sharing settings. Tap ‘I accept’ to proceed. This only appears on the first use. |
| 6 | Choose how long to share your location
A duration selector appears with the following options: • For 1 hour — your location is shared for 60 minutes from when you start • Today only — your location is shared until midnight of the current day • Until you turn this off — your location is shared indefinitely until you manually stop • Custom — set a specific duration |
| 7 | Tap ‘Start sharing’
After selecting the duration, tap the start button. Your live location immediately appears in the chat as an interactive map. The other person sees your location updating in real time as you move. |
| Tip:
You must be signed in to your Google Account to use real-time location sharing. If you are not signed in, Google Messages will prompt you to sign in before the feature activates. |
How to View Someone Else’s Shared Location
When someone shares their real-time location with you in Google Messages, you receive a message in the conversation showing an interactive map with their current position. The map updates automatically as they move you do not need to refresh it.
- Tap the map in the conversation to expand it to a larger view
- Your contact’s location is shown as a pin on the map
- The time their location was last updated is displayed alongside the pin
- You can see how long they have been sharing their location
You cannot request someone else’s location they must choose to share it with you first. The sharing is one-directional unless both parties independently choose to share with each other.
How to Stop Sharing Your Location
You can stop sharing your location at any time, regardless of the duration you originally selected. You do not have to wait for the time to expire.
| 1 | Open the conversation
Go back to the conversation where you started sharing your location. |
| 2 | Tap the location message
Find the message in the chat that shows your live location map. Tap on it. |
| 3 | Tap Stop sharing
Next to your name in the location view, tap ‘Stop’ or ‘Stop sharing’. Your location sharing ends immediately. |
You can also manage location sharing from Google Find Hub settings or from your Google Account’s location sharing controls at myaccount.google.com.
Privacy: What Google Can See and What the Recipient Sees
Understanding the privacy model matters because this feature works differently from end-to-end encrypted messaging.
| Important privacy note:
Google Messages supports end-to-end encryption for RCS chat content. However, real-time location sharing is powered by Google Find Hub which is separate from E2EE messaging and processes your location through Google’s servers. This means your location data is handled under Google’s Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, not the end-to-end encrypted messaging model. If you require location sharing that is not accessible to any server intermediary, this feature is not appropriate for that use case. |
What the recipient can see:
- Your real-time location on a map inside the conversation
- When the location was last updated
- How long you are sharing for
- They cannot see your location history after you stop sharing
What you control:
- How long your location is shared you choose at the start
- You can stop sharing at any time with one tap
- You choose exactly who you share with by opening a specific conversation
- Location sharing does not activate automatically you must initiate it each time
Troubleshooting: If Real-Time Location Is Not Showing
The feature is rolling out gradually to Google Messages users. If you do not see the Real-time location option in your attachment panel yet, here are the most common causes and fixes:
- The feature has not reached your account yet: Real-time location is a server-side rollout. If your attachment menu does not show it, wait a few days and check again. Clearing the Google Messages app cache (Settings > Apps > Messages > Storage > Clear Cache) can sometimes accelerate the rollout.
- Google Messages is not updated: Go to the Play Store, search for Google Messages, and tap Update if available. The feature requires a recent version of the app.
- RCS is not active: Real-time location sharing only works in RCS conversations. Go to Google Messages > Settings > Chat features and verify RCS is enabled. If the conversation shows ‘SMS’ rather than ‘Chat’, the feature will not be available.
- Not signed into a Google Account: Go to Google Messages settings and verify you are signed in. The feature requires a Google Account.
- The recipient’s device does not support it: Both devices need to be using Google Messages with RCS active. If the other person is using a third-party SMS app or a non-Android device, the feature will not work.
Google Messages Location Sharing vs WhatsApp and iMessage
| Feature | Google Messages | iMessage | |
| Real-time location | Yes — March 2026 | Yes | Yes (iOS 15+) |
| Duration options | 1 hour, Today, Indefinite, Custom | Live location (60 min / 8 hr / indefinite) | Until end of day, indefinite |
| Powered by | Google Find Hub | WhatsApp servers | Apple servers |
| Works cross-platform | Yes (Android to Android) | Yes (any device) | No (Apple only) |
| Works over RCS | Yes | N/A (own protocol) | N/A (own protocol) |
| Works over SMS | No | No | No |
| Stop sharing anytime | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Map visible in chat | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Google Messages uses Google Find Hub, while WhatsApp encrypts location data end-to-end. If you want to keep your location private from the provider, WhatsApp is more secure. But for daily tasks, the difference doesn’t matter.
Real-World Use Cases Where This Is Most Useful
-
Meeting friends at a crowded venue? Share your location for one hour. This way, they can find you without all those ‘where are you?’ texts.
-
Airport and Station Pickups: Share your location from the moment you land. Your driver will confirm when they find you. Then, stop sharing.
-
Family Coordination During Travel: Parents and kids can share their locations on day trips or vacations.
-
Late-night safety check-in: Share your location with a trusted contact when walking home or reaching a new place. Do this until you know you’re safe.
-
Group meetups: Share in a group chat. This way, everyone can see your location. You don’t have to tell each person one by one.
